TERREMOTO is an international historical orchestra that, through musical dialogue and a passion for history and the arts, brings together artists from around the world. After a series of concerts in Europe during the Bach Academy organized by Teatro Comunale di Modena, musicians from Italy, Poland, France, Bulgaria, Russia, Ukraine, and Mexico continued their artistic journey within a newly founded ensemble.
The project was initiated by Jakub Kulawik, who for many years had aspired to establish an ensemble specializing in the performance of early music. The realization of this idea became possible thanks to collaboration with the right musicians and the support of individuals who provided essential assistance.
TERREMOTO (Italian for “earthquake”) in the Baroque theory of the affections signifies a phenomenon that is energetic, powerful, dynamic, and deeply engaging. The ensemble’s repertoire naturally turns toward trumpet-and-timpani music, a prominent feature in the works of 18th-century European composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Georg Friedrich Haendel, and Georg Philipp Telemann.
The orchestra is based in Kraków — the cradle of the Polish Renaissance, where the pulse of culture has intertwined for centuries with vibrant humanistic thought. Among the stone witnesses of history, whose architecture opens gateways to past centuries, music acquires new meanings, and its context becomes deeper and more emotionally resonant.
The orchestra operates under the patronage of the Artistic Association Ars Sonoris, which provides comprehensive organizational support and secures the financial resources necessary for the realization of its artistic activities. The Association actively promotes the rich musical heritage of Poland and Europe, bringing it closer to contemporary audiences and inspiring future generations.
International collaboration in the field of early music supports the search for appropriate performance techniques and more faithful interpretation, enriching artistic expression. Through the exchange of experience, musicians develop their skills and broaden their historical perspective. Such cooperation also fosters the international promotion of early music, building cultural bridges and strengthening dialogue between nations.
